Description

Serial Number 1 Afton Large Size

Serial Number 1 Afton, NY - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 606 First National Bank Ch. # (E)11513 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
This is a quite lovely, high-grade serial number 1 example from this small bank that was the sole note issuer in this Chenango County location. Opening in 1919, this charter released only the $5 denomination in both large and small size and in 1935 it had $25,000 outstanding, of which just $720 comprised large-size notes. It continued to operate as a successful independent institution until it merged with a Norwich bank in 1962. To date, two serial number 1 notes are reported - the "B" plate position piece, which we are offering this evening and the "D" position note which was last on the market ten years ago in a PMG About 55 holder. This is a pen-signed beauty with ample margins all around, excellent color, and fully original paper surfaces. It has been carefully preserved over the past century, as attested to by PMG's assigned grade. This is a great note for the New York specialist or anyone who appreciates number 1 notes.
