One of Two Known New York $50 Originals
Rhinebeck, NY - $50 Original Fr. 442a The First National Bank
Ch. # 1157 PMG Choice Fine 15.This is one of the great rarities in Richard's holdings, as it is one of only two $50 Original Series examples extant from any New York bank, with the third piece listed in the National Bank Note census a well known counterfeit from the National Broadway Bank of New York City. This note has been off the market since Dick obtained it from Bill Donlon in Bill's June 28, 1974 Mail Bid Sale. With the sole other New York Original Series $50 having no auction record and no previous sales record, it may be another half millennium before any fortunate collector enjoys the opportunity to add a New York $50 Original to his or her holdings. PMG does note a couple of repairs, one in the bottom margin where a small piece has been added and one at the top where another piece has been added and does enter the design, but the overall appearance is actually quite pleasing. The note displays bright paper, a sharp overprint, and clear pen signatures. Dick Boyce paid all of $270 for this note nearly fifty years ago, and it would not surprise us at all if it now realized nearly 100 times that figure this evening.
