Description
New York, NY - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 609 The NB of Ridgewood Ch. # 12897"Ridgewood is one of the oldest communities on Long Island, going back to an early Dutch settlement in 1709. Left in ruins after the British evacuation of New York in 1783, Ridgewood was a rural farming community until the mid-1800's, when a wave of German emigrants settled there, starting a wave of development that saw the construction of breweries, beer halls and tenements, likely in about that order. Ridgewood covers an area in both Brooklyn and Queens, with this bank chartered in Queens but actually operating out of an office in Brooklyn. The bank issued $5 Plain Backs only during its short six year life, with this piece having been graded Choice Fine 15 by PMG." This was our description when we sold this note as part of Judge Crater's collection a year ago.
