One of Two Large Size Reported

New Berlin, NY - $5 1902 Date Back Fr. 594 The National Bank of New Berlin Ch. # (E)10199 PMG Very Fine 25.
A great note from this very rare Chenango County bank that is one of just two large size reported. After the failure of Charter 151 in 1912, the village of New Berlin was left without a banking facility. Accordingly, the leaders of the community got together another national entity. This institution was far more successful than its predecessor and would remain in business until it merged with a Norwich bank in 1946. However, the bank maintained a circulation level of just $12,500, and had only $640 in large outstanding in 1935. Not surprisingly, large notes from this charter are downright rare, with only two pieces currently reported in the National Currency Foundation census. These notes are a $10 Date Back in a PMG Very Fine 25 holder that we recently sold for $3,840, and this $5 Date Back that was last on the market in our sale of the Bill Sabis collection in 2003. While it retains excellent color and bold pen signatures, it does have some staining in the top margin along with a minor repair. Nonetheless, it still provides a great opportunity for September's disappointed underbidders to finally acquire this rare charter.
