Description
Mount Vernon, NY - $1 Original Fr. 382 The East Chester National Bank Ch. # 1772 PMG Very Fine 20.A scarce Westchester County bank whose claim to fame is as the holder of the record for the longest distance move of any issuing bank when it decamped from New York to Evansville, Indiana in 1873, doing business there as The German NB before bowing out completely in 1890. Even more interesting is that the note bears the signature of one "W. Tweed" as President. Mr. Tweed is better known to history as "Boss Tweed," the head of Tammany Hall in New York City which plundered the city's coffers and eventually landed a disgraced Tweed in jail. Tweed, along with his partner in this bank Cornelius Corson, a Mount Vernon resident, was invested in Mount Vernon real estate and undertook a scheme to have the New York legislature split the southern part of Westchester from that county and make it part of The Bronx, which would place it under the control of New York City's political regime. The "Tweed Ring" was exposed and brought to justice before Tweed could profit from his Mount Vernon investment, with Tweed fleeing the country and eventually dying a pauper's death. This piece was obtained from Bill Donlon, although the exact date Dick bought during the 1970's is somewhat uncertain. It has been eight years since any note from this bank has been offered at public sale, with that piece, a split damaged VF 35 missing a corner tip fetching almost $4000 in our FUN 2015 auction. PMG mentions "Minor Rust," which consists of a few tiny margin spots that affect nothing.
