Description
One of Two Notes Known
Elmira, NY - $2 Original Fr. 387 The Chemung Canal National Bank
Ch. # 811 PMG Very Good 10.An excessively rare note from a Chemung County bank that was only in existence for five years before liquidating in 1870. By 1910, a mere $797 was left outstanding by this short lived issuer. Just two notes are definitely confirmed as surviving from this charter - an ace that made its last public appearance in our May 2000 auction and this deuce which we last offered in our 2017 Long Beach auction. The National Currency Foundation census records an additional ace and deuce, but neither of those pieces is listed with a serial number and any other descriptive information is identical to the two notes that do have a recorded serial number. Therefore, it is quite likely those other two notes are duplicate listings. This deuce faces up nicely for the assigned grade with decent color and signatures and just minor evidence of a previous mounting on the back.
