Description

Keene, NH - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 467 The Ashuelot NB Ch. # 946
A lovely $5 Brown Back which is one of only three such examples in the census. It is head and shoulders above the other two, one of which grades Very Good and the other Very Fine. This piece was graded Choice Uncirculated in its last auction appearance, a 1983 Kagin sale, and it comes very close to that mark, having been graded as Choice About New 58 by PCGS. The seal on the reverse is a version which appears based on the officially adopted New Hampshire state seal, which dates from 1784, but is actually quite different. The official seal depicts a broadside view of the Raleigh, one of the first thirteen ships ordered by the fledgling U.S. Navy in 1776 and built at the Portsmouth shipyard. The ship is anchored in a bay and flies the Stars and Stripes from the stern and pennants from the mast, with a rising sun shown on the horizon. The seal used on all New Hampshire First Charters and Brown Backs shows the same ship, but in the process of construction, with workers, lumber, a team of horses, etc. The flag, pennant, and sun are missing, and the seal used on the notes appears to be the "before" to the official seal's "after." Further research is clearly called for, because, just as in the case detailed in the description of the Iowa note offered above, the process by which the state seals found on these notes was chosen, and just who made the choice is still shrouded in mystery.
