Description

Very Rare Montana Territory Original Series Ace

Helena, Montana Territory - $1 Original Fr. 380a The First National Bank Ch. # 1649 PMG Very Fine 25 Net.
A great Montana rarity from an early capital city bank that issued First and Second Charter notes only before failing in 1896. While eleven notes are reported from this short-lived charter (all Territorials), four of those notes are tied up in an uncut sheet (which sold at auction in 2008 for $299,000), and of the others, only the Original Series ace we are offering this evening has made a public appearance in over 20 years. For many years, many of the great Montana notes have been tied up in one family, leaving very few opportunities for other collectors to acquire a "special" note from this western state. This ace, which according to the National Currency Foundation census, has a provenance to the Amon Carter collection. It is a lovely note for the grade with flashy ink colors and bold pen signatures. PMG has noted some minor repairs but they are trivial and not at all distracting. While there are no auction records for an ace on this bank, an example in a PMG Very Fine 30 holder from a Missoula bank fetched almost $40,000 at auction in 2015.
