Description
Lovely Sleepy Eye Red Seal
Sleepy Eye, MN - $10 1902 Red Seal Fr. 613 The First NB Ch. # (M)6387A lovely note bearing one of the great names in Nationals. It comes from a small group of very close to New Red Seals, all from sheets 330 through 334, that have been known for at least the past fifty years, and have, of course, long since been dispersed amongst the collecting public. The town received its unusual name from Chief Sleepy Eye, a Sioux Chief who met with President James Monroe in 1824, and was persuaded there to agree to a treaty giving up most of the Sioux lands in western Minnesota. The last note from this group offered for sale was in a PCGS Choice About New 55 holder and realized almost $7,050 in our 2015 FUN auction. This example, bearing the characteristic top to bottom vanity signature of the bank's Cashier, and housed in a PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ holder, should likely approach that level this evening.
