Excessively Rare Minnesota Serial Number 1 First Charter Five

Serial Number 1 Faribault, MN - $5 Original Fr. 399 The Citizens National Bank Ch. # 1863 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ.
This is certainly one of the highlights of tonight's auction as this beautiful note is one of only two Serial Number 1 First Charter Fives, either Original Series or Series of 1875, reported from any Minnesota bank. Amazingly, we are indeed fortunate enough to be able to offer both of these unique Number 1 notes in tonight's auction. This piece is part of a very small, and elite, group of Number 1 First Charter notes from Minnesota that totals six in number, with the other four known examples all being Aces, one of which is ensconced in the Higgins Museum.

Fortunately for collectors, this offering, which is crossing the auction block for the first time, is as lovely as it is rare, as it features loads of eye appeal with bright paper, vivid ink colors, bold two-color pen signatures, and very little evidence of circulation. It is just the second Number 1 First Charter note from Minnesota to ever be offered at public auction with the last occurrence being when we auctioned an Ace from a Minneapolis bank eight years ago for over $25,000. This great Minnesota trophy note, which is fit for the finest of collections, should approach that realization.
