Description

Excessively Rare Dorchester Note

Dorchester, MA - $5 Original Fr. 394 The First NB Ch. # 156
This attractive Original Series $5 comes from one of the toughest to find Massachusetts banks we have ever offered. It is represented only by an Original Series $1 note, which has been off the market since its last appearance nearly thirty years ago, and by a pair of Original Series fives, the first of which we sold back in 2008 for just under $15,000, and by this example, which was obtained privately by our consignor in the 1980's and has not seen the light of day since. This bank, which was chartered in 1863, had the distinction of being the second National Bank in Massachusetts to fail, which it did in 1868 after less than five years of operation. Bright PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30, with the Apparent grade assigned because of a tiny repair in the bottom left corner, a truly rare note worthy of a very strong bid.
