Description

Hancock, MD - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 599 The First NB Ch. # (E)7859
Hancock is located in far western Maryland and was, unfortunately for the town's residents, a site of frequent troop movements and battles during the Civil War, as it lays on one of the main roads linking the Shenandoah Valley with points north. Only seven large examples are reported from this institution, which was the sole issuer of large notes from here. This piece is the finest of that small group. Like more than a few of the notes in the Watts holdings, it traces its pedigree back to the collection of the late Dr. Leonard Rothstein, the preeminent Maryland collector from the 1960's through the 1990's. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
