Description

Moscow, ID - $10 1902 Plain Back Fr. 625 The First National Bank Ch. # 3408 PMG Very Fine 20.
A rare large size example from the home of the University of Idaho, the land grant institution and the primary research university for the state of Idaho. Contrary to popular myth, there is no evidence whatsoever that this community took its name from the city in Russia or was named by a Russian immigrant. After the town was settled in 1871, a group of citizens met to establish a name for their new community. They failed to agree, and the papers were given to the postmaster, Samuel Neff, who chose the name "Moscow." It is likely no coincidence that Mr. Neff was born in Moscow, Pennsylvania. While somewhat available in small, this piece, which we last handled in our 1996 FUN auction, is one of only five large reported. It displays nice color and signatures with some slight trimming of its margins.
