Description

Excessively Rare Baldwin NB of Kahului Note

Kahului, Territory of Hawaii - $10 1902 Date Back Fr. 617 The Baldwin National Bank Ch. # 8207 PMG Very Fine 25.
An excessively rare Territorial note from one of the three banks to issue Nationals on the island of Maui. In business only until 1921, just five survivors from this institution have been recorded, with this piece tracing its pedigree back to an early RARCOA ANA auction in 1970. It appeared as Lot 1870 in that sale where, for that era, it realized a strong $1,550. It was acquired by A.J. Ostheimer III who was putting together an impressive Hawaii collection that was later sold by Superior in 1975. In its February sale that year, the note appeared as Lot 1507 and fetched $3,700, and thereafter entered the Territorial collection of J.L. Irish, where it remained until the sale of The Irish Collection in 1997. Since none of the other four known pieces have crossed the public auction block since 2004. This may be the last opportunity for many years to obtain any note from this downright rare charter. PMG has noted a couple of minor repaired splits, but otherwise, this offering is bright for the grade, with a sharp blue overprint and vivid purple signatures.
