Description

Unique South San Francisco

South San Francisco, CA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 609 The Citizens National Bank Ch. # 12364 PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
A quite lovely example of a unique California rarity, this is the sole example reported from a bank that was the sole issuer in this San Mateo County community. When this piece was last publicly offered in our 2014 FUN auction, we said, "This institution was a short lived entity, having lasted in business for less than four years before closing its doors forever in March of 1927. Until this note surfaced, there had not even been a hint that any example from this bank existed, with notes from this institution having eluded the grasp of all of the great California collectors from Richard Sara and Charley Colver to Phil Krakover and Lowell Horwedel. It is offered here to the collecting fraternity for the first time, and most fortunately, it is just as nice as it is rare, displaying bright white paper, a bold blue overprint, and sharp pen signatures." In frenzied bidding activity, this unique note soared to a final price of $88,125. Almost a dozen years later, it is still just as unique and just as desirable and could approach that realization again.
