Description

Elkhart, IN - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 466 The First National Bank Ch. # 206 PMG Very Good 8.
Serial number 12265-H in this lot was previously a part of The Bob Cochran Collection that we auctioned in September 2015. We do not know where and when Bob acquired the note, but we do know that this is its second auction appearance. The first known use of the term "Circus Poster" was not recorded, but the terminology quickly spread within the hobby. There are three varieties of Circus Posters and BEP Die 947 was employed to print the first variety that is represented in this lot. The arched, banner-like "National Bank" is above the town's "Elkhart" tombstone and "Will Pay/the Bearer/on Demand" is in three evenly stacked, downward bowed lines to the immediate left of the ornate rendering of "Five Dollars." The evenly circulated example in this lot is in a comment free PMG holder.
