Description
Seven G.F.C. Smillie Progress Proofs. This is an incredible set, done by Smillie in the Fall of 1917. The finished version of this portrait was utilized initially on three $1 types: the 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note and the 1923 Legal Tenders and Silver Certificates. In 1928, it was placed on our first Small Size $1 notes, and the vignette is still used to this date. All seven proofs are in contemporary frames, numbered 1 through 7 on their backs. The earliest has a pencil notation in the lower left in Smillie's hand, "George Washington - from Athenaeum Portrait by Stuart, 1st proof G.F.C. Smillie sculpt. 19 Nov', 1917." The second, slightly more finished, proof bears, "2nd Proof, 20 Nov', 1917 G.F.C. Smillie." The third is similarly inscribed and dated Nov', 23, the fourth similarly inscribed and dated Nov. 26. The final three, ending with the finished as-used portrait, are uninscribed although they are numbered on the back. This is the most printed vignette in the history of the world, and this set represents an irreplaceable run of progress proofs signed and dated by the engraver at various stages of the creation of the master plate, from draft to finish. (7 vignettes) Est. 2,500 up (Total: 7 vignettes)
