Description
Progress Proofs. Three extremely interesting progress proofs of an unidentified bearded man by G.F.C. Smillie on India paper mounted on card. The earliest offered here, annotated in pencil No. 2 is dated 21 Mch 1902-Noon. The next, annotated in pencil No. 3 also bears the additional pencil inscription Six hours work since No. 2. The last die state, annotated No. 4 also bears the penciled-in information 25 Mch 1902-8 hours work since No. 3. Additionally the card mounts are imprinted on their backs in blue 42141, 42273 and 42401 respectively. Taken together these images capture the very precise and detailed workings of a master engraver.
