Description
U.S. NAVY SAILOR HOUSED IN A NAVAL THEMED THERMOPLASTIC CASE.The photograph is an early ambrotype made on clear glass with a black painted back. There are some minor scuffs above the sailor's left facing shoulder but they are quite immaterial on this rare image. The photographer has applied silver and gold tinting to his hat. What initially appears to be a pistol in his hand is actually a belaying pin. The ambrotype resides in the perfect case, for it shows a Monitor Type Ironclad steaming past a fort and both flying U.S. flags. The corners of the case are rounded and it has a few minor cracks and a non-working clasp.
