Autographed Letter as President of the Mexican Southern Railroad Company

Ulysses S. Grant Autographed Letter. Apr. 15, 1882. Not graded.
On company letterhead. New York. United Bank Building. The company was chartered in 1881 with now former U.S. President Grant as company president. Grant and Mexican politician, Matias Romero, pitched the company at the Delmonico Hotel in New York City. Grenville M. Dodge was installed as Vice President, Russell Sage as Treasurer, and John Henry Work as Secretary. The Executive Committee members were Jay Gould, Frank Work, and Russell Sage. Within a few years the company went bankrupt and lawsuits were filed against Gould, his brother George, Dodge, Sage, and Frank Work. Jay Gould was one of the notorious "Robber Barons" of the later nineteenth century.

This autographed letter is addressed to (Colonel) W.L. De Beck of Cincinnati, Ohio. The letter states:

"Dear Sir:
I have your letter of April 4 conveying to me an invitation from the Executive Board of the National Forestry Congress to attend a meeting to be held in Cincinnati commencing on the 20th of this month, as the personal guest of the Board.
I regret very much that it will not be possible for me to attend as I contemplate making a trip West later in the season, and cannot very well go twice.
Very Truly Yours
U.S. Grant

Some pencil notations are found on the verso. Not even a month ago we sold a Presidential appointment signed by Grant that realized $2,880. This letter is certainly not that valuable but it shows how desirable collectors find material with his autograph.
