Promissory Note Signed by Samuel Meredith $1,000 November 29, 1805 Very Fine.
Entirely handwritten. Three cross-cut cancels. Header: Trenton November 29, 1805. Obligation reads: "Sixty days after date I promise to pay John Bayard his order, without deflation or deduction, One thousand Dollars for Value received." Signed Sam Meredith. Endorsements on verso of both S. Meredith and John Bayard.
Samuel Meredith served as a Brigadier General during the Revolutionary War. He was a Philadelphia merchant and served as a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress from 1786 to 1788. George Clymer was married to Meredith's sister, Elizabeth, and he and Clymer eventually joined together in business. George Washington appointed Meredith his first Treasurer of the United States and he served in that capacity during the presidencies of both Washington and Adams from 1789 to 1801 before retiring. Samuel Meredith is most famous in paper money collecting circles as having his portrait on a 50 cent Fourth Issue type of Fractional Currency.
John Bayard was from Philadelphia and he served as a Colonel in the Continental Army. Later, he was a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress in 1785 and 1786. He spent a good bit of his time in later years serving as the Mayor of New Brunswick.
