Heath, Laban Heath's Infallible Counterfeit Detector At Sight Pocket Edition Third Edition 1870 44 Pages Similar to Newman 3-P-1 Fine.This green color volume has all of its plates and pages and is similar to Newman 3-P-1, see The American Numismatic Association Anthology, "Heath Counterfeit Detectors: An Extraordinary Successful Comedy of Errors" pages 241-271 by Eric P. Newman. All plates plus all pages are present for this "similar to Newman 3-P-1 volume. Two pages of Fractional Currency count as plate 1 even though the plate is not numbered in this Newman number. Also, plates 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 17 are present. Plate number 10 was deleted for the Newman 3-P-1 number. Plate 15 is the face and back of a counterfeit $100 Boston National, plate 16 according to Newman is a counterfeit $20 National, however, this particular volume contains the face and back of a counterfeit Friedberg 93c$10 Legal in its place, and plate 18 is a counterfeit $10 Philadelphia National. All in all, this volume has one plate that is different than Newman 3-P-1 and therefore it has earned the "similar to" cataloging comment. Discrepancies in Heath's such as this can be attributed to either an error during assembly or a shortage of the counterfeit $20 National plate. A previous owner has rubberstamped his name on the frontispiece and also on the unprinted back of the counterfeit $100 Boston National.
