Description
Great Seal of the Confederate States of America Not Graded. The diameter of the actual Great Seal is approximately 3.5 inches/86mm on this postbellum pressing into thin metal. The Great Seal of the Confederate States of America was originally engraved by Joseph F. Wyon of London, England with the seal reaching the Confederacy in 1864. A similar seal is depicted on T64 $500 notes. This memento to the Confederacy reads, "The Confederate States of America : 22 February 1862" (a commemoration of the inauguration of President Jefferson Davis) above the words "De Vindice", Latin for "God Will Vindicate", the mottos are separated by two stars at the five and seven o'clock positions of the disk. Centered in the seal is the uniformed figure of George Washington on horseback, enclosed by a wreath designed to symbolize the principal products of the Confederacy. The original seal was made of silver. During the evacuation of Richmond, it was overlooked by the Confederate authorities and subsequently fell into the possession of Union Colonel John T. Pickett of Washington, D.C. He had a number of electrotype copies made in copper, silver, and gold. The piece in this lot may or may not have anything to do with Colonel Pickett's electrotype copies. The best guess Confederate researcher Peter Bertram has is that it is a close relative of his B862-402f (bronze shell Great Seal) found on page 111 of his reference Confederate Numismatica Part 1, Forerunners Through 1889. Bertram states that he has seen maybe four B862-402f pieces over the years. The example in this lot is not graded, but it has a small hole in the upper right corner outside of the seal's design and at back upper right is a handwritten number. Also, there is a small number in red on the back that reads, "4664" at lower left. Nonetheless, an item that is ripe for research. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason.
