Description
Letter from Assistant United States Attorney General on the Government's Views on Prosecution of Those Guilty of Treason Following the Civil War
Autographed Letter from Joseph Hubley Ashton, Attorney General's
Office. June 24, 1865. Not graded. On lined paper with Attorney's General Office letterhead. Washington June 24, 1865. Addressed to William Price Esqr. United States Attorney Baltimore, Md. Joseph Hubley Ashton was assistant United States district attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania from 1861 to 1864. From 1864 to 1867 he was assistant Attorney General of the United States. During the time period of 1868 to 1869 he was twice tasked with being Acting Attorney General of the United States. This letter reads as follows:
"Sir:
The attorney general has received the letter of Mr. Thayer of the 16th inst. He desires me to say that your understanding of his views relative to prosecutions, in your district, for treason, as reported by Mr. Thayer, is entirely correct.
The government does not think that it is expedient, at this time, to institute wholesale prosecutions, so to speak, against the class of persons whom you describe. The ends of public justice, will be accomplished at this time, by the prosecution and punishment of the more prominent, influential, and conspicuous of those who engaged in the rebellion. (over)
I am Sir very respectfully
Your obedient Servant
J Hubley Ashton
Apt. Atty General "
Both sides of this letter show glue mounting residue. There are a number of edge tears as well. When one considers that this historical document was written a little more than two months following the end of the Civil War, and how its contents detail the government's thoughts on how to deal with those 'engaged in the rebellion,' it appears to be quite a significant item.
