Description

Andrea Doria Recovered United States $1 1935E Silver Certificate Not Graded.
This damaged $1 Silver was recovered from the shipwreck of the SS Andrea Doria at a depth of 225 feet. The Andrea Doria sunk on July 26, 1956 after colliding with the MS Stockholm. The ship's safe was salvaged in 1981 and opened on live television in 1984. Inside were United States Silver Certificates, Canadian bank notes, American Express travellers checks, and Italian bank notes, but no other valuables. The rescued note in this lot is housed in acrylic within a presentation box. An informational booklet dated 1985 is included along with a professional presentation box. There is also instructions of how to take care of optical grade acrylic. The signatures on the informational sheet that is also inside the acrylic are of two of the divers associated with this project, Peter Gimbel and Elga Andersen. This note is not graded, but around 50 per cent remains. However, only one character is missing from both serial numbers. The acrylic measures approximately 9 by 6 by 1.5 inches. There will be no returns on this lot for any reason.
