Very Scarce Watermelon Note

Fr. 377 $100 1890 Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 30.
Watermelon Hundreds as well as their rarer cousins Grand Watermelons have always held a special fascination for collectors. This popular note, earned it the nickname of the "Watermelon Note" due the large engraved digits on the back. The $100 denomination joined a number of other Coin Notes in honoring Civil War Union military figures; in this case Admiral David Farragut who forced the capitulation of New Orleans in April 1862, dealing the Confederacy a severe strategic blow. This is a pleasant mid-grade note with no repairs or condition distractions. The note is printed on bright paper with well-inked design details, including a large spiked brown Treasury seal and the trademark green back with watermelon-like zeros in the denomination. The note is fully margined and has good face-to-back registration. This is a very scarce note, with only 35 examples currently recorded in the census.
