Beautiful 1890 $100 Watermelon
Fr. 377 $100 1890 Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 30."This Watermelon Hundred is one of fewer than three dozen examples of its type in existence, and one of fewer than two dozen that have ever appeared on the market. Eight pieces are permanently in government hands, and several others are known by serial number only, having never reached the numismatic marketplace. The back, from which the nickname of this note is derived, is beautifully clean, and the 'Watermelon' effect of the large zeros remains pronounced, as the print quality is razor sharp. This piece is beautifully margined, with the only place even questionably close being the lower right of the face where the margin approaches but does not touch the frameline. With the current tremendous emphasis on paper money collecting, it is a shame that only two dozen collectors are in the exclusive group that may possess this stately type." That was the description that we used when we last auctioned this note in May 2007. At that time, it realized $143,750; that remains the most recent sale in this grade range. Two PCGS 45's have sold in the last two years, one for $142,000 and the other for $201,000. This note will likely bring just about its 2007 price when it crosses the auction block this evening.
