Description
Famed 1890 $100 Treasury Note
Fr. 377 $100 1890 Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 25 Net.Watermelon Hundreds as well as their rarer cousins Grand Watermelons have always held a special fascination for collectors. This particular note is rather good-looking for the grade, and although it has been restored, as is noted on the PMG holder, the restoration is difficult to detect and of virtually no consequence. According to Track & Price just 35 examples of this Friedberg number are known with eight of those notes permanently housed in institutional collections. The back design of the $100 and $1,000 Treasury Notes shows the denomination engraved in large digits and finely detailed. The zeros in the number printed in green resemble watermelons. This note was last on the market way back in 1996 selling for $13,200. The colors are excellent for the grade, and, while certainly evenly-worn, the note is intact with strong margins and not a single problem that really stands out. The last appearance of an example was Eric P. Newman's note graded PCGS 30PPQ which realized $199,750.00 at Central States last year.
