Description

Gem New Open Back "Coin Note" with the Stately Portrait of Chief Justice John Marshall

Fr. 375 $20 1891 Treasury Note PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
Doubly complimented by PMG with the back of the label emphasizing "Exceptional Paper Quality, Great Embossing." The note certainly does appear strictly original and is likely being held to the 65 grade only by the top margin which is just a tad too close to permit the 66 grade. Superb in every other respect. This note is from the run that has supplied the only known Uncirculated examples of this type. This type had been unavailable in high grade until a decade ago, when a small group of Uncirculated notes unexpectedly appeared. John Marshall, whose portrait appears on this note, served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He died in 1835. The portrait on the note was engraved by Charles Schlecht, from an oil done by Harry Inman.
