Description

PMG 58 McPherson Treasury Two

Fr. 355 $2 1890 Treasury Note PMG Choice About Unc 58.
Both services together have graded only an even half dozen Uncirculated examples of this very tough type. Save for an angular top margin which comes close at the left edge, this McPherson Treasury Deuce would be a flaming Gem. The design concept in 1890 was seemingly to cover every square inch of the back with engraving. In 1891, the opposite design philosophy was employed with lots of white space drawing the eyes' attention to few engraved features. Most of the Coin Note denominations featured portraits of Union military officers. General McPherson, whose portrait graces this note, died in the Battle for Atlanta in 1864. He was the second-highest ranking Union officer to be killed in battle.
