Serial Number One Fr. 236 $1 1899 Mule Silver Certificate PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 Net.A search of our archive shows just three other Serial Number 1 Black Eagles have been offered in our auctions in the last decade plus. Two of the pieces have each realized around $20,000, while the Fr. 223 D1 we sold in our late 2006 September Long Beach Auction realized more than $50,000 in a PMG 66 EPQ holder. This R1A has two previous auction appearances, once as a single note in 2005 where it sold for $29,900, and again in 2007 when it was sold are part of multi-note lot. There is some minor corner damage, which is inconsequential to the overall eye appeal of the note, as the paper and overprint are bright and attractive. The discovery of this note and its first-ever offering here make it a great opportunity for serial number specialists. The one hundred millionth note from this block and the N-A block are also known to collectors. It would complete a rollover set from the N-A block notes that we sold in early 2006, or would be the first and last of the R-A block, were it paired with known serial number R100000000A.
