Carmi A. Thompson Courtesy Autograph on Serial Number 4 Chief

Low Serial Number H4 Carmi A. Thompson Courtesy Autograph Fr. 276 $5 1899 Silver Certificate PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ.
A beautiful note that has so much going for it, including bold originality. It is from the most elusive of the $5 Chief Friedberg numbers. Fr. 276 currently stands at a measly 55 serial numbers in the census, with its nearest competitor, Fr. 272, having over 200 more serial numbers recorded. The note also has the courtesy autograph of Carmi A. Thompson above his engraved signature as Treasurer of the United States. This is the only Thompson autographed Fr. 276 that we have been able to offer in any of our sales.

A brief summary of the H1 through H3 notes is in order to show that this may be the only chance to get such a high caliber note on this Friedberg number. The H1 note is a mid-grade example that has not been seen since 1995, the H2 note is locked away in the collection of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the H3 note made its last appearance at an October 1957 auction. The last recorded sale of this particular piece was in late 2006 when it sold for $32,200. Since then, only two finer PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQs, both featuring regular serial numbers, sold for right around the same amount. This trophy note has the same eye appeal along with other elements that make it a treasure for the ultimate large size specialist.
