Description
Completely Original & Superb Gem $5 Educational - Tied for Finest Certified
Low Serial Number 29 Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PCGS
Banknote Superb Gem Unc 68 PPQ.Blessed with a low serial number 29, this breathtaking $5 Educational is, to say the least, an exceptional piece. Four even margins are observed on this example which also displays dazzling green ink colors and cascading red and blue silk fibers at both left and right on the back as well as vivid red Treasury Seal color on the face at lower right. Pleasing face to back registration is yet another highlight of this note. We have auctioned examples of this number in this lofty grade just twice prior to now, with one of those offerings being this exact piece which crossed our auction block as part of our January 2009 FUN CAA Signature Currency Auction. It was housed in a PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ holder then, and our consignor acquired it for $74,750. Thus, this representative has been off the market for nearly two decades. Looking further into the past, this note's provenance can be traced back to an individual who purchased it from famed collector and numismatist Aubrey Bebee for a princely sum of $12.50 in the early 1950s. In January 2009, we described it as tied for the "finest graded to date" of any $5 Educational number. Though a small number of additional 1896 $5s have achieved this grade since January 2009, that description is still applicable today. PCGS Banknote has certified just four representatives of this number at this level, with none finer for both the number and the overall type. PMG has not graded any Fr. 268 piece higher than Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ, though they have certified one Fr. 269 piece as a 68 EPQ. With its astounding condition, low serial number, and storied provenance, we would not be surprised to see our estimate outpaced tonight.
