Amazing $1,000 Silver Certificate Face Proof

Fr. 346e $1,000 1891 Silver Certificate Face Proof Hessler 346-e/1411 PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
Only 5,600 examples of this $1,000 Silver Certificate were issued, and not surprisingly, the vast majority were redeemed. In fact, today only two issued survivors are known, with one being held by the Smithsonian Institution. Thus, the only realistic way to own an example of this design is via a small handful of Face Proofs which have survived. A team of seven engravers was employed to produce this design, with Charles Schlecht engraving the portrait of William L. Marcy which appears at right. Marcy was a career politician serving in a number of roles including United States Senator (NY 1831-33), Governor of New York (1833-38), Secretary of War (1845-49), and Secretary of State (1853-57). He died on July 4, 1857. The portrait at left, a female allegorical figure representing Liberty, is a bit more controversial. Some have suggested that portrait could have been inspired by Josie Mansfield, stage actress and mistress of "Diamond Jim" Fisk. Fisk was known as one of the "robber barons of the Gilded Age" who was murdered by another of Mansfield's suitors in 1872. While there is quite a resemblance, your cataloger doubts that this is anything more than an urban legend. For those interested in owning this design, the only realistic option lies with several Face Proofs of the design which are known to exist. We have offered a narrower margin Face Proof which crossed the auction block for $48,800 in our 2026 FUN U.S. Currency Signature Auction and now offer this India paper Face Proof mounted on a larger sheet of bonded paper, with a roulette 000000 serial number at upper left, as-made. This larger format example sold at public auction in 2014 for $111,625. With the subsequent appearance of a couple of Face Proofs with narrower margins, we believe that our conservative low estimate will allow the market to determine this Face Proof's price in today's market environment. It is difficult to estimate how many survivors actually exist, but it is unlikely that there are many more than the three or perhaps four of which we are currently aware.
