Fr. 345d $500 Silver Certificate--Unique in Private Hands

Fr. 345d $500 1880 Silver Certificate Very Fine. This is the first $500 Silver Certificate we have had to offer in any of our 28 sales. Only four examples of this design type exist outside of government hands, three of which are the Bruce-Gilfillan signed Fr. 345c, making this Bruce-Wyman signed 345d unique in private hands. The only other example of this note known to exist is an identically graded piece that now resides in the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. This example is a handsome, well margined piece absolutely free of repair or restoration that has retained remarkably strong color for its grade. Although clearly circulated, every line of the intricately engraved reverse is sharp and clear, and the overall appearance of the note is absolutely riveting. This note has been off the market for the better part of twenty years, and, after this evening's offering, it may become impossible to ever again acquire an example of this Friedberg number. If rarity, desirability and exclusivity have any meaning in this market, this note is certainly a candidate to approach or even exceed the seven figure mark. Est. 800,000up
