Fr. 345a $500 Hessler UNL 1878 Silver Certificate Face Proof
PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ.A Face Proof with perforated serial number 000000, this example was printed on India paper, cut down to note size, mounted on bonded paper in an album, and later, the page was carefully removed. The portrait is of Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts from 1851-74. He is best known for the caning he took from Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina on May 22, 1856, in the United States Senate chamber. Sumner died on March 11, 1874, and was soon thereafter memorialized on this $500 Silver Certificate design. This design was used for Friedberg numbers 345a (Series 1878) and 345b-345d (Series 1880). The 23rd edition of Friedberg states that there are eight known examples across all four numbers, but four of those notes are held in government collections. This leaves a meager four examples of the design to satisfy collector demand. However, Fr. 345a Series 1878 is represented only by a single note and it resides within the Smithsonian Institution. Therefore, the only way to obtain this number is to acquire the Hessler unlisted Proof in this lot as we know of no others, even for other Friedberg numbers of this design. This Face Proof last appeared at auction in 2018 where it brought $31,200. All bidders should be prepared to go at least that high for this unique numismatic item.
