Iconic Monroe $100 Silver

Fr. 344 $100 1891 Silver Certificate PCGS Very Fine 35.
A very handsome, problem-free mid-grade example of the James Monroe $100 Silver Certificate. Monroe was the fifth President of the United States, serving from 1817 to 1825, and he was the last of the Founding Fathers to be President. He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, which he announced in a message to Congress on December 2, 1823. Simply put, the intent was to keep the Americas free from further European colonization and interference. This note, which bears his portrait at the left, is wonderful for the grade and has much of the eye appeal of an Uncirculated example. The colors are perfect, the margins broad all around, and the print quality is super sharp. Track & Price reports 31 examples of this Friedberg number, with this previously unlisted note from the Newman Collection bringing that total to 32. Not very many of those reported notes will have the eye appeal of this marvelous piece. Also, about 25% of the known notes for this number are held in government institutions, making this note even rarer than the statistics at first suggest. Since this piece was last offered nearly three years ago, a PMG 45 EPQ sailed past $150,000, so this piece might prime for a jump past its past realization.
