Lovely Fr. 341 James Monroe Hundred
Fr. 341 $100 1880 Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.The latest Track & Price census shows an even two dozen Fr. 341 examples extant, with one quarter of that number residing in museum or other institutional holdings. Most of the remaining specimens have been the subject of repairs and restorations, including the last two pieces in this grade to cross the auction block, the first of which went for $132,000 with a "minor restoration" and the second which sold for $87,000 with some "minor repairs," which clearly were not so minor. This piece comes to us courtesy of the Coral Gables Collection, and fortunately, displays no sign whatever of any repairs or restorations, major or minor, save for a couple of closed pinholes, which truly affect nothing. The margins are even on both the front and back, and the colors are bright and sharp. It's been off the market since a lone appearance on a 1979 fixed price list, and now will afford one fortunate collector the opportunity to add a lovely example of a major type note rarity to his or her holdings.
