Stately $100 Chambliss Plate Note 1880 Black Back Silver Certificate - One of Only 25 Known

Fr. 341 $100 1880 Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
This handsome James Monroe large brown seal black back $100 Silver Certificate serves as the plate note on page 111 of the 2014 edition of the Chambliss-Hessler reference. A rare note, with Chambliss listing 25 known examples and Track & Price 24. The James Monroe portrait is one of the largest on all US Currency and it remains in place at the left on all twelve Silver Certificate hundred varieties from 1878 through the green back 1891 series. PMG has graded this note as a VF 30 and commented that there are, "Minor Repairs," none of which have caught our eye. This past January we sold an identically graded example for $132,000. We ended that description with, "The Track & Price auction results cover such a wide range of realizations for similarly graded notes that a true grip on the market is quite difficult. We feel quite confident with a six figure estimate." The sale of that note has given us a firmer feel for the value of this note.
