Description

Rare Face Proof Fr. 336/337 $100 1878 Silver Certificate

Fr. 336/337 Hessler UNL $100 1878 Silver Certificate Face Proof PCGS Choice New 63PPQ.
Featuring a large portrait of James Monroe, engraved by Louis Delnoce based on a portrait by John Vanderlyn, the Series 1878 $100 Silver Certificates were issued in very limited quantities with either engraved or autographed countersignatures of the appropriate assistant treasurers in New York, San Francisco, or Washington, DC. This Face Proof is unlisted in Gene Hessler's U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes second edition reference. As a Proof type, this piece is extremely important because the issued type notes with the countersignatures and no series dates are virtually unknown; nearly all having been redeemed. Friedberg and Hessler/Chambliss both estimate a total of six known surviving examples; four on the Washington, D.C. office, and one each on the New York and San Francisco offices. Of these, only two examples, both from Washington DC, are in private hands. As a result, Face Proofs such as this example offer the only realistic way to own at least a partial impression of the black ink portions of the face design (minus the text indicating the Assistant Treasurer office location). It is printed on India paper mounted on bonded paper with two roulette 000000 serial numbers. This Face Proof last crossed the auction block for just under $50,000 in a 2014 public sale. Our conservative low estimate should allow the current value to be established in today's market environment.
