Description

First Auction Appearance in Almost 35 Years

Fr. 328 $50 1880 Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
A $50 Silver with only one previous auction appearance and that occurred in 1988. Track and Price lists 27 examples of this rare note, with the piece in this lot having the highest serial number known of A99774-B. Even that low population figure is deceptive because eight examples are locked away in the following collections, the ANA Museum, the Smithsonian (2), and the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond, Chicago, Dallas, and San Francisco (2). That leaves a meager 19 for collectors to pursue. The Fr. 328 in this lot is one of the highest graded by PMG as they have examined only five with a higher grade. The piece in this lot is a nice representative for the grade. It is well centered within balanced margins and also has the merits of sound edges and paper. Also, unlike several of this Friedberg number, it has not been repaired. We auctioned another PMG VF 30 with minor repairs for $40,800 in May 2022. Our current comment-free offering has a good chance of eclipsing that earlier winning amount.
