Description

Finest Offering in Nearly a Decade

Fr. 313 $20 1886 Silver Certificate PMG Extremely Fine 40.
Series 1886 $20 Silver Certificates are an elusive type. Just over 1.7 million notes were printed for the entire series, comprising the four numbers listing in the Friedberg reference. The Fr. 313 is in a special class however. William Rosecrans and James Hyatt were in office together for less than two years from early 1887 to 1889. Production of the 1886 Series began during their tenure but just 12,000 notes were printed with their signature combination. Today, the survivors are few with fewer than 20 enumerated in the census. This piece is the second finest to be offered in the last decade. In 2007, a PMG About Uncirculated 55, serial number B12, realized $109,250. This example has just two more folds than the aforementioned piece, neither of which is significant or detracting from the eye appeal. When we last offered this note at auction in 2000, our description of the physical attributes read, "This piece is absolutely perfect for the grade, with broad margins, terrific color and no defects whatever." It remains an elusive Friedberg number of an elusive type and about as fine as a collector might be able to locate for a decade to come.
