Description

Extremely Fine Fr. 311

Fr. 311 $20 1880 Silver Certificate Extremely Fine. When we first sold this note seven years ago, it was a new note to the census. It's a very attractive piece, with only a few light, hard-to-see folds. The note is clean and decently margined, with its only defects being a few very short, well repaired edge splits. The Stephen Decatur portrait is particularly lifelike and that along with the vivid brown seal and "XX" bring to the note the appearance of an uncirculated piece. Although about 125 Fr. 311's are known, only ten of those have been graded AU or better, several of which are impounded; in all likelihood, not many of that number are - in actuality - nicer than this note. Seven years ago, this note realized $3300, a figure that will be easily eclipsed this evening.
