Description

Brightly Colored Mid-Grade Decatur $20

Fr. 309 $20 1880 Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 25.
A bright, moderately circulated Decatur $20 Silver is offered in this lot. This piece is one of just 64 examples recorded in the Track & Price Census for this number. The bold brown overprint at center, which contains a large Treasury Seal and two large X's composing the Roman numeral for 20, retains much of its original color. Dark blue serial numbers accompany well printed design details on the face and a detailed portrait of Stephen Decatur, well known for his action in the burning of the USS Philadelphia in 1804 as well as for becoming the youngest captain in US Navy history at 25 years old, at right. While many notes of this number have attracted myriad impairments, this example has just a minor repair.
