Description

Triple-Signature Silver Certificate - One of Seven Fr. 285a's Known

Fr. 285a $10 1878 Silver Certificate PCGS Very Good 10. Only seven Fr. 285a's are known in total. Just a single note is reported to be high grade, with the rest in a very tight cluster around this note. PMG has not seen a Fr. 285a yet, and PCGS has graded this and one other which is in an Apparent VF 20 holder. No pieces have reached auction since September 2006 when we sold a raw VF 20 for $34,500. This note last sold in a December 1998 Lyn Knight sale for $9900. We would expect a fair bit more this evening. The piece faces up extremely nicely for a VG 10, and looks to us as though it is graded a bit on the conservative side. The strength of the inks, especially the red seal and overprints, are quite unusual for a VG.
