Description

Monumental $5 Porthole

Fr. 282 $5 1923 Silver Certificate PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ.
Thanks to early collectors, some notes would be almost unavailable to collectors in high grade. Vault cash, which is the source for many Uncirculated notes typically provides notes in the lower Uncirculated grades since packs were often counted, tossed around in audits, and generally not well cared for. A few small runs of $5 Portholes were set aside and carefully stored, providing for some of the Gem and Superb Gem examples known today. While collectors have a chance at a Superb Gem every 6 to 12 months, the next level of preservation is special. This incredible 68PPQ is the only example of the grade to ever appear at public auction, with no finer examples graded. One other PCGS example is known in this grade, with no notes graded by PMG at this level. The margins are identical down to the millimeter, the printed devices are bold, and the embossing reveals even the finest details of the Treasury Seal. In it's only other auction appearance, this piece realized nearly $50,000, a number that could be easily surpassed when comparable prices of other early 20th Century type designs like the Technicolor can reach six figures in 67.
