Description
Gem Chief $5 Silver Certificate
Fr. 277 $5 1899 Silver Certificate PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 66
PPQ.Many state notes before the Civil War depicted Native Americans. However, this note type is the most prominent and, in fact, the only post war note to prominently portray a Native American as the central feature. Over the years, there have been several schools of thought as to the subject of the portrait on the face, with the most commonly accepted one that it depicts Chief Tatoka-Inyanka (Running Antelope) of the Hunkpapa Sioux. The note is darkly printed on top-quality paper with original surfaces and retains its deep blue, green, and black colors. Margins are well matched and face-to-back registration is also quite good. At present, this note and one other are atop the PCGS Banknote population which totals 91 examples for this Friedberg number. Of the 611 examples of this number presently residing in the PMG database, only three notes would out grade this example if it received the equivalent PMG grade.
