Gem $5 Educational

Fr. 270 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 66 PPQ.
The Educational $5 is, without question, one of the most consistently popular currency designs issued in the United States. While even circulated examples attract attention when they cross the auction block, Gem examples such as this have the ability to steal the show. This note has a lot going for it. The design, of course, includes an amazing vignette titled Electricity Presenting Light to the World featuring a scantily clad winged allegorical figure, Electricity, holding aloft a light bulb, surrounded by Fame and another allegorical woman with Jupiter in the background. This panoramic vignette occupies almost all of the face of the note and reveals new details almost every time it is inspected. The back contains portraits of Grant and Sheridan. The note is darkly inked, sharply printed and framed by four boardwalk margins, tipped by four razor sharp corners. Gems such as this are often placed into tightly held collections, causing the collecting community to take note when one is finally offered at public auction. A fabulous note worthy of the finest collections, it is the third highest graded example in the relatively small PCGS Banknote population of 25 notes at present. As a point of reference, had this note received the equivalent grade from PMG it would currently be tied for the second highest graded note out of the 372 examples of this Friedberg number presently in the PMG Population Report.
