Gorgeous Superb Gem $5 Ed

Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ.
We last entertained this gorgeous $5 Educational at auction in January 2005 as part of the Malcolm A. Trask Collection. That was this note's first recorded auction appearance. We graded it then, before its third party encapsulation, as Superb Gem New and it realized $20,125 on a $12,500 and up estimate. We were able to examine this raw note in hand at the time and our description follows in part, "This Five Dollar Ed from the Trask Collection is one of the finest examples of its type that we have ever had the privilege of handling. It is utterly Superb in every respect, with broad, even margins, perfect centering, deep, original embossing and crackling fresh paper surfaces. The inking, which is often a problem on this type, is absolutely perfect, and the note has the visual impact of a carefully preserved printer's Proof. Expect some serious competition for this pristine beauty."

Malcolm A. Trask was a born and bred New Yorker whose interest in numismatics began with coins, but soon shifted to paper money. He began to collect seriously during World War II and soon became a prominent member of the paper money collecting fraternity that made New York City the hub of the market throughout the 1950s. He attended most of the major auctions of the era, from the later Barney Bluestone auction sessions of the Albert A. Grinnell Collection through such famous offerings as the Frank A. Limpert auction of September 24, 1955 and the T. James Clarke auction of November 8, 1955. He was also a regular client of several dealers in town. The Trask Collection comprised almost 300 large size notes, many of which were Uncirculated, in denominations $1 through the $20. Mr. Trask collected type notes by Treasury Seal, and his collection was virtually complete.

PMG has now graded the example in this lot and they have confirmed our original grade. PMG has graded a paltry seven Fr. 268 notes equal to our current offering and none higher. In fact for all three $5 Educational Friedberg numbers, Fr. 268-70, they have graded only nine equal and just one note higher and that by a single grade point. The last PMG 67 EPQ example that crossed our auction block fetched $38,400 in January 2021. A strong bid will certainly be needed in order to add one of the highest graded examples of this popular design to your collection.
