Exceptional 1886 $5 Silver Dollar Back

Fr. 262 $5 1886 Silver Certificate PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 (EPQ).
An earlier graded example from PMG. At the time this note was graded, the EPQ comment was random and sometimes did not appear even on exceptional notes. On all examples graded Gem and higher, the EPQ comment will be added by PMG on request. This is one such note. This is the third time we have sold this note. The second time out, we used this description: "This note last appeared in our September 2005 Long Beach Auction where the description read, 'The original embossing remains easy to see through the third-party holder on this gorgeous Silver Dollar Back type. The margins are broad and the colors are perfect. Fr. 262 is a much scarcer Silver Dollar Back number, with fewer than 50 examples known, compared to over 160 for the previous number, Fr. 261, and over 200 for the following number, Fr. 263.' It sold for a crowd pleasing $22,800 on an estimate of $10,000-up. Expect an even higher realization this evening for this superlative example." It did indeed realize a higher number, fetching $54,625. The census numbers have changed a bit since this note's 2007 appearance. There are now seventy-nine examples known for Fr. 262, 256 for Fr. 261, and 295 for Fr. 263. PMG has graded a total of 31 examples with four at this level and none higher. No 67 EPQ has sold since 2008 when our FUN Auction saw one realize $74,750. The most recent price record for comparison is the PCGS 66 PPQ which realized just over $44,000 in our October 2012 Auction.
